I changed into another of my new skirts and a plain, white top. Then I twisted my hair up with the raffia pineapple hairband. I even put some make up on for the first time in days. When I went out into the living room, I saw Kit was standing, bare-chested, ironing a shirt.
Ironing!
Bare chested!
Both things made me feel distinctly light-headed for a moment.
He was watching some financial news on the TV and he looked super cool in just chinos and bare feet. Really, completely gorgeous. Muscular and tanned and⦠how had this man remained resolutely off the market for such a long time? That woman heâd married and mislaid would be kicking herself now if she could see him.
When he saw me, he switched the TV off and looked me up and down.
âYou look delightful,â he said.
I felt myself blush and I fidgeted around a bit with my handbag.
âThank you. So do you,â I said.
Perhaps that doesnât work? Telling a man he looks delightful? Particularly when he wasnât wearing a shirt. But he did.
He just laughed, swung his shirt on and buttoned it up while I pretended to look at the Brisbane skyline.
We went down to the restaurant and were shown to a table by the window. There was soft music, a few glamorous couples already eating. The ceiling was covered in strings of white fairy lights. As darkness fell outside, it was magical. Far below us we could see cars edging along past the river, pleasure boats decked out with illuminations, the dozens of elegant buildings that made up Brisbaneâs new silhouette.
âHungry?â Kit said as we looked through the menus.
âAnd greedy,â I said, and he laughed.
Then he reached forwards and moved the flower arrangement on the table (gerberas and greenery) to one side.
âThatâs better,â he said, âI couldnât see you properly.â
Wow, he wanted to see me. Well, the view from where I was sitting was pretty great so I wasnât objecting. Was he flirting with me? I rather think he was. Was this wise? Was he just trying to charm me? And was this another sympathy-pity-flirt? Or the real thing? It was a while since Iâd flirted but that didnât mean I couldnât.
âHere I am,â I said, and I smiled.
We ate delicious food and drank wine and chatted non-stop, and it was almost like we were old friends. Perhaps we were becoming friends now? That would be nice. I donât think Iâd ever known a man who was a friend.
Iâd heard people talking about their spouse in that sort of glowing terms. Heâs my husband and my best friend⦠Iâd never for a moment considered Tom like that. Which was a bit sad really. And had I been Tomâs best friend? Probably not.
âDessert?â Kit said.
âI think Iâm a bit full,â I said regretfully.
âThatâs a shame,â he looked at the menu, âthey have ice cream. Ten flavours.â
âYou have some, Iâm quite happy,â I said.
He ordered chocolate chip, and it came in a glass bowl with a raspberry coulis and mint leaves.
